Stress Fractures (Overuse Foot Fractures)
A stress fracture (overuse fracture) is a small crack in a bone from repeated stress—often from running, long walking, or sudden increases in activity. It can also happen when footwear is poor or the body is not recovering well.
Common symptoms
- Pain that builds gradually over days to weeks
- Pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest
- Tenderness in one exact spot
- Sometimes mild swelling
Diagnosis
We take X-rays to check for a fracture and alignment. Early stress fractures don’t always show on initial X-rays, so the exam and history matter. If needed, advanced imaging may be considered.
Conservative treatment options
- Walking boot or stiff shoe to protect the area
- Stop impact activity (running/jumping)
- Gradual return only after pain-free walking and healing guidance
- Address risk factors (training errors, shoe support, nutrition, vitamin D as appropriate)
