Plantar warts are caused by HPV (human papillomavirus) and typically show up on the bottom of the foot. They can look like a thick callus, but they often hurt with pressure—especially when walking or standing.
Treating them early usually makes treatment easier and helps prevent spreading.
Common plantar wart symptoms
- A rough, thick spot on the bottom of the foot
- Pain with walking or pressure (often feels like stepping on a pebble)
- Pinpoint black dots inside the lesion (tiny clotted blood vessels)
- Pain when squeezing from side-to-side
- One wart that turns into a cluster
How plantar warts spread
- Public showers, locker rooms, pools
- Barefoot walking in shared areas
- Small cuts or cracks in the skin
- Sweaty feet or shoes that trap moisture
- Picking at the lesion (spreads the virus)
Treatment options
1) Topical treatments
Many warts respond to consistent topical therapy. Common options include salicylic-acid–based products and other prescription topicals when appropriate.
Vircin is a topical wart medication that includes salicylic acid (to gradually break down thick wart tissue) plus additional ingredients designed to support treatment when used consistently.
2) In-office debridement
Carefully trimming down the thick wart tissue can:
- Reduce pain
- Improve penetration of topical treatments
- Speed results when combined with a home regimen
3) Freezing or chemical treatments (selected cases)
Depending on the wart’s size, location, and how painful it is, in-office options may include freezing or other chemical treatments.
4) Laser treatment
Laser can be used early in the treatment plan when the goal is to clear the wart quickly and reduce spread.
How laser works on plantar warts:
- It targets wart tissue and its tiny blood supply, helping destroy the wart from the inside out
- It reduces the bulk of the lesion and helps shut down the wart’s “support system”
- When combined with debridement and a consistent topical plan, it often improves overall results and shortens the treatment course
At Mike Liu Podiatry, Dr. Liu focuses on getting rid of plantar warts as quickly as possible using a combination of laser, in-office debridements, and Vircin.
